Wellness Visits Q & A

Why are wellness visits necessary?

Wellness visits are necessary because it helps ensure your child is healthy, growing, and developing as they should. Childhood is a period of rapid growth and change. Though not all children grow and develop at the same rate, they tend to all follow a pattern.

At your child’s wellness visit, the team at Inspirada Pediatrics checks your child’s growth and asks about their skills to assess development. Then, they compare your child’s growth and development with other kids their age and their previous evaluations, making it easy for them to spot deviations.

Finding developmental or growth delays early improves your child’s chances of catching up quickly.

When should I bring my child in for a wellness visit?

When you bring your child in for a wellness visit depends on their age. In general, infants and toddlers need more frequent visits because it’s a period of rapid change. Once your child reaches age four, they only need an annual wellness visit.

Ages your child needs a wellness visit:

  • 3-5 days old
  • 1 month old
  • 2 months old
  • 4 months old
  • 6 months old
  • 9 months old
  • 12 months old
  • 15 months old
  • 18 months old
  • 24 months old
  • 30 months old
  • 36 months old
  • Annual visits from ages 4-21

Wellness visits aren’t the same as sick visits. You can schedule a sick visit at Inspirada Pediatrics anytime you have concerns about an illness or injury. The pediatric practice even has same-day appointments for sick visits.

What happens during wellness visits?

The specifics of your child’s wellness visit at Inspirada Pediatrics depend on their age and developmental history. In general, you can expect your pediatrician to:

  • Measure height, weight, and head circumference (up until 36 months)
  • Check vision and hearing
  • Evaluate ears, nose, and throat
  • Test reflexes
  • Palpate organs
  • Ask about diet and physical activity

The team also asks about your child’s development, ensuring they’re engaging in the activities that are expected at their age.

After the exam, the pediatrician answers all your questions and concerns and provides guidance on how to ensure your child stays well. They also provide any vaccines your child needs.

Because the wellness exam is a comprehensive evaluation of your child’s total health, the team can include your child’s school or sports physical during the wellness exam.
