Newborn Care Q & A

What is important to know about newborn care?

Newborn care is essential for keeping newborns healthy. Newborns rely on you for their needs, like eating, bathing, dressing, and comfort.

Newborns are also more susceptible to infections because they have an immature immune system. In addition to providing all their care, you also must protect your newborn from illnesses and injuries.

Parenting is hard at every stage, especially when you have a newborn.

Inspirada Pediatrics provides the evaluations, support, and education you and your newborn need to stay healthy during this first stage of life.

When do I start newborn care?

Newborn care usually starts immediately after the delivery of your baby. In the hospital, a pediatrician performs a physical exam, checks for concerns, and administers a vitamin K injection. The pediatrician may also apply an antibiotic on the eyes and recommend the hepatitis B vaccine.

Your first newborn care appointment at Inspirada Pediatrics should happen 3-5 days after birth. However, you can make your newborn care appointment sooner, especially if you have health concerns or questions.

This visit includes a check of your baby’s length, weight, and head circumference; it also includes a physical exam. Your provider also asks about eating, diaper changes, and sleeping and answers all your questions.

Your newborn grows significantly during the first few weeks of life, and early newborn care ensures your baby is growing as expected.

The team schedules your next newborn care appointment on your baby’s one-month birthday.

My newborn looks jaundiced. Should I schedule an appointment?

If you have any health concerns about your newborn, you should schedule a visit at Inspirada Pediatrics, whether it’s before or after your initial appointment.

Jaundice is a yellowing of the skin and eyes. It usually appears 2-4 days after birth and occurs because there’s too much bilirubin in the blood. The team at Inspirada Pediatrics also recommends scheduling an appointment if you have concerns about feeding, urinating, pooping, or inconsolable crying.

They also provide referrals to specialists for any concerns brought up during prenatal ultrasounds or at the hospital.

Parenting is hard, but the team at Inspirada Pediatrics can provide the support and guidance you need to make it a little easier. Call the office or request an appointment online to learn more about newborn care.
